now i'm going to shed more light on one of my laws.

spill the light, more like.

regarding 3-d sounds compared to 2-d sounds.

this whole concept is direct influence from allen vizzutti during a combined trumpet clinic with jens lindermann.

the 'd' stands for dimensions, in which 2-d sounds only comprises of only 2 dimensions: sine waves and white noise.

confusing?

well if we take a string instrument as an example, vibration of the string causes the sine wave dimension, whereas the scratching of the the bow against the string causes the white noise dimension.

similarly on a wind instrument, standing waves within the tubing causes the sine wave dimension, and the air being blown into the tubing causes the white noise dimension.

and for some time i've been obsessed with getting the best sound i can out of everything. i have tried improving the sine wave to white noise ratio, upgrading my audio equipment, stocked up on lots more recordings, but still something was lacking in all the sounds i've experienced.

and that something is the third dimension: the human dimension. it's a very peculiar feeling when you get the human dimension right; you experience a resonance so strong, so colourful, and so in touch with yourself. and i remember coming across this question: why do humans create and enjoy music. and this experience with the human dimension concept presents itself as an apt answer to that question, especially the part about creating music, albeit not being grounded in scientific laws.

also when i revisited my music collection with the 3-d sound concept, suddenly every single piece of recording has so much more depth and perspective. and little nuances in the sounds never noticed before are now coming out strongly into my face, and i don't have to depend on high grade audio equipment to hear things clearly in the music. returning to my iems and headphones simply enhances the accuracy of sounds, and gives even more depth and perspective to the sounds.

ok i don't really know why the heck i am explaining so much, but i had quite a meaningful discussion regarding music with jinhao before rehearsal the past saturday and i just thought i should put this up to him because i was like just listening and not reciprocating much.

personally i think i'm hoping this post will help musicians to find their way to loving music if they have not done so. it just seems like there's this pseudo music culture among quite alot of people these days, and it's not just among the young.

oh well. i don't think i have a right to criticise anybody from the so called 'pseudo music culture' with my measly experience. however as morrie schwartz always say, things are always better out than in.
